Shaun the Sheep style Pom-Poms!

Over the last couple of days we’ve been making pom-poms, and added Shaun the Sheep-style faces to them. Pretty cute, don’t you think?

Making the pom-poms were a joint effort, while the black felt faces were cut out and fastened (with thread) by me. Penguin then made the eyes, and stuck them on using glue. The whites are made from card, using a hole-puncher, and the pupils are added with black pen. TOP TIP: A waterproof pen is preferable, as the glue might otherwise make the black ink bleed.

In case you’re new to making pom-poms, here’s a quick ‘how-to’:

  • Cut out two circles (of the same size), out of cardboard.
  • Cut out the center of each circle, so that you end up with two cardboard rings. (You could also cut a slit in each ring, for the yarn to pass through, but it’s not a necessity. We tried doing that this time, as you can see in the pictures, and while it made the process quicker it also made it quite easy for the yarn to slip out of the ring, which was annoying. I guess you’ll just have to try and see which method you prefer.)
  • Put the two cardboard rings on top of each other, and wrap yarn around them until they’re so full it becomes difficult to add more. If your piece of yarn runs out somewhere along the way, don’t worry, just grab a new piece and keep going.
  • When you’ve filled your rings with yarn, get a pair of scissors, stick them between the two layers of cardboard, and cut the yarn all the way around the outside rim of the circles.
  • Then take a piece of string, put it betweem the cardboard layers, and tie the yarn together tightly.
  • Remove the cardboard rings and fluff up your pom-pom!

Motivation Magic…

Penguin is an avid Shaun the Sheep fan, and to base activities around already existing interests is a great motivator. For kids like Penguin, motivation is key. If he’s asked to do something that he lacks motivation for, he’ll often quickly get annoyed, anxious, frustrated, angry or distracted. But when highly motivated, he often surprises us with abilities we didn’t even know were there!

  3. Awww how fab are those! I used to make pompoms when I was little and had completely forgotten about them until now. I’m definitely going to give these a go with my little one. How clever to turn them into sheep! Perfect for the lead up to spring and all the new baby animals. Thanks for joining us for the #DreamTeam x

  4. Aw, an adorable little sheep! I wish I had this tutorial a few years ago when we had my son’s How to Train Your Dragon Party. I made yarn “sheep” for them to toss in the baskets but my sheep looked more like strings of yarn! LOL. Thanks for sharing with us at the Virtual Refrigerator. Pinned.
