“Beside the side of the silvery sea…”

IMG_1186

As I was publishing my previous post the other day, on nature as ‘sensory room’, I realised that a large part of my examples of sensory rich nature experiences were from the seaside. Not so surprising perhaps. Just to stand on a beach, looking out across the eternity of glimmering water, hearing the rythmical swooshing of the waves, is a both soothing and uplifting experience for most of us. And then there’s the shifting light, the reflections, and the birds gliding past above us, along with the clouds. And the tactile sensations of sand, grass, stones, driftwood… the wind caressing our skin, and on a good day also the warmth of the sun.

“Oh I do like to be beside the seaside…”

…as does Penguin. A lot. And not only in good weather. He loves challenging the waves on a blowy (though not TOO windy) day, running along the edge of the water, only just keeping his feet dry, and occassionaly getting caught out and soaked.

In the past few days we’ve been to three different beaches, on three different days and in varying weather conditions. The love of the water and the whole beach environment gives us so much joy!

Another time I might write about the fears and nightmares which the combination of autism and love of water can bring… But right now I just want to celebrate being “beside the side of the silvery sea”, with these photos from our beach visits this week:

  1. Kids really do love being beside the seaside don’t they? I know that if I gave my lot the option they’d be at the beach in an instant! Penguin certainly does seem at ease stood by the waters edge, it must be lovely to be able to visit so many beaches. I love the sensory aspect of the beach too, there’s certainly some so calming about it.

Thanks for sharing with me on #CountryKids.

  2. Firstly thank very much for the lovely comment on my country kids post.

We live near the sea and its amazing to be able to go everyday whatever the weather. The sea is just a great teacher and listener and healer. We wouldnt know how we would survive without being there when we need to.

    1. Yes, I’m so happy he shares my love for the seaside! The shell thing is some kind of animal, which we haven’t yet been able to figure out what it is… Looked a bit like those ‘trilobite’ fossils, but this one died more recently, obviously 😉

  4. #thesatsesh my favourite UK seaside is a winter beach. Desolate and the sea salt air some how magically energising you (bonus is it also gives me super volumed hair). We live on the south coast and Id only move closer to the sea, id feel sad without my top up of pebble walks.

    1. Thank you! The pictures are taken at three different beaches in the South East of England. The most amazing one of the three is at Pett Level, just east of Hastings. Make sure you go there at low tide, and be careful when it starts coming in again x

  7. Lovely photos here and really good points; we love the sea, too, especially not in peak season when we find it too crowded. This time of year is great, especially for walks, collecting shells and making hairy faces with seaweed! Thank you for another great post. #adventurecalling

  8. Absolutely love your photos, so beautiful. I love being at the seaside and I know that Finn got so much out of spending time by the sea last summer. I just wish we lived nearer so could escape to the beach a bit more, I’m a bit jealous of your adventures near the sea! Thanks so much for sharing with us #AdventureCalling

  9. We love the beach too and in any weather. In fact I’d say we go to the beach more in winter than at any other time of year. I agree, the beach is such a wonderful sensory experience when slow down, stop and take it all in. Thanks for joining us on #adventurecalling
