Apple crumble has been one of my autumn favourites since as long as I can remember. And as it’s so quick and easy to make, I think it’s a nice one for making together with kids! So today we’re sharing how Penguin and I usually go about making our apple crumble:
List of ingredients:
2 Bramley apples
c. 2 spoonfuls of sugar
(a sprinkling of cinnamon, optional!)
(for the crumble topping:)
150 grams of butter/Stork or other baking fat
200 grams of flour
A pinch of salt
50 grams of granulated sugar
Step 1: Get your ingredients ready, as well as a cutting board, knife, scales and a bowl, and of course a dish to make the crumble in. Turn the oven onto about 220 C/Gas Mark 7. Wash your hands and your apples, then get started!
Step 2: Cut your apples up and places them in the dish. Sprinkle them with a couple of spoonfuls of sugar, and perhaps also a little cinnamon, if you fancy.
Step 3: Now it’s time to make the crumble topping. Put the butter/margarine in a large bowl in smallish lumps or cut into pieces (depending on how firm the type of fat you’re using is). Then add the flour, sugar and a pinch of salt.
Step 4: Mix it using your finger tips, until you get a crumbly texture. (Penguin isn’t super comfortable with this bit, so I usually do most of the ‘crumbling’.)
Step 5: Sprinkle the crumble topping over your apples, then place in the oven (somewhere near the middle) for about 15-20 mins.
Step 6: Serve up and enjoy! I love vanilla ice cream or custard with mine. Penguin mostly likes the crumbles, and isn’t keen on ice cream or custard. How do you like yours? x

I too love rhubarb crumble! I’ve always made that with fresh rhubarb though, so only ever while it’s in season. Do you know if your grandad makes it with frozen rhubarb? Maybe that could work just as well… we might have to give it a try 🙂 xx

Sounds like a good plan to hand the project of making this to your oldest, and then you can help with the eating 😉 x

The good thing about that is that there will be more for you 🙂 Penguin will sometimes eat some of it, but is usually more keen on the making than the eating. I on the other hand am all about the eating! xx
